Avoiding falling victim of online fraudsDated : 29/04/2007

Dear users,

We have been informed that sellers advertising on our site have been approached by possible buyers from abroad with various propositions about buying the car and then exporting it outside Cyprus.

The communication methods are usually through anonymous emails but some have experienced phone calls as well from foreigners trying to setup a transaction like this. The usual demands from the buyer is to send you a cheque and then arrange for exporting the car.

You might be tempted to deposit the cheque in your bank only to find out that there is no money in the account. The buyer might also demand personal information such as passport or ID card information or even for your bank account number. Please do not be tempted to give such information.

The scenarios above constitute advance fee fraud in which funds are transferred usually abroad in exchange of goods but of course the goods are never received. People have actually lost their lives from these kinds of frauds after travelling abroad to meet these potential buyers usually in north African countries like Nigeria. These methods of fraud have also acquired the nickname of “419 Frauds” because of the penal code used in Nigerian law.

We advice you that if you have been contacted for any suspicious transactions like this you should first call your bank and explain the situation and inform the police. You should also sever any communication with the fraudsters.

Also please be advised that BuyCar.com.cy will NEVER ask for your password or any other personal and confidential information via email or phone!
